The head of the Downtown Alliance gave a detailed presentation of the work they do for our city.

John Bandemer, a retired policeman, is now the Director of Safety Strategies at the St Paul Downtown Alliance. The Alliance is funded by property owners in the downtown area through their annual property tax (yes, that means you). Mr. Bandemer’s focus is on safety, vibrancy and cleanliness. He oversees a contractor that employs about 35 people to keep the streets clean and safe. His group picks up garbage, cleans graffiti, and helps with general maintenance during both everyday use of the city and for special events. Others in his group walk the streets to build community and keep eyes and ears out regarding safety issues. They are represented on the light rail platforms and in the skyways as well as on the streets. They are not police officers and do not engage in volatile situations but are there to call in help if needed and to monitor activity.
